Asthma Care
Comprehensive Care supports asthma care through education, promotion of best practice, and funding to improve access.
Asthma affects around 1 in 8 New Zealanders, with approximately 96 deaths each year, highlighting the importance of delivering consistent, evidence-based, and high-quality care.
The GASP Programme
The GASP (Giving Airway Support to Patients) Programme provides structured support for primary care teams to improve asthma outcomes through comprehensive asthma education and evidence based clinical decision support. The GASP Programme has two integrated components:
Training for Clinicians
The GASP™ Fundamentals Course is a self-paced online programme providing practical, evidence-based education in asthma assessment, guideline-based treatment, inhaler technique, action planning, and patient education.
Completion awards a GASP™ Competency Certificate and 20 CPD hours. A refresher course is also available.
More information about the course can be found here:
Clinical Decision Support Tool
The GASP™ Tool is an integrated clinical decision support system that guides structured asthma assessments and generates personalised management plans, asthma action plans, and patient education.
The decision support provided by the tool is based on New Zealand Asthma Guidelines and is tailored to the patient’s medical history, asthma history, symptoms, risk profile, and clinical information entered during the consultation.
It supports clinicians to deliver consistent, evidence-based care while ensuring recommendations are relevant to the individual patient in front of them.
Completion of the GASP™ Fundamentals Course (or an approved equivalent) is required to use the GASP™ Tool. To request a demonstration of the GASP™ Tool or to discuss how you can start using the GASP programme at your practice, please contact us.
Access
The GASP™ Tool and training are provided at no cost to CCPHO member practices. GASP-trained health professionals within these practices may claim for asthma assessments.
The programme is also available to non-member practices. Please contact us for access and pricing information.
